UVA vs Virginia Tech: 48-8

After a disheartening loss to UNC in the finals at the Appalachian State University AHO tournament, UVA women are back on track with a whopping 48-8 win against Virginia Tech. Coaches Nancy Kechner and Julie Comer have worked their magic again and restructured practices to target team weaknesses and further develop special skills and field awareness.

The first ten minutes of the game were a little sloppier than UVA is known for. We had trouble catching kick-offs and arrived at rucks two steps too slow. However, after some regrouping and refocusing, we began to play at the pace and the rhythm we are best at. Katie Estep, a former outside center and flyhalf, saw time at inside center for the first time in her career and played well, despite a consistently offsides opposing back line. Stephanie Chubb once again found and made holes, flying through the defense early on in the back line. Fullback Amber "Anger" Crossman played strong defensively and ran well with the ball, breaking a few ankles with her shifty hips and flying speed. Front row Makenzie Kirk, Emily "Mouth" Mastandrea, and Natasha Boyette dominated the scrums as usual, winning put after put and cleanly wheeling the opposition scrum 180 degrees almost every time. Flanker Rosa "McMoshi" Bauer-Moshi tackled with perfect technique and her hits created a sonic boom-like quality and could be heard in all corners of Blacksburg. We look forward to playing VT women again at states on Nov 6-7!

The B-side had an amazing weekend with a win against Mary Washington B's on Saturday and another win against Virginia Tech B's on Sunday. Our rookies are improving rapidly and earning a great deal of respect on the field!

Thanks to all our fans, including Katie Estep's family, and especially Makenzie Kirk's family, who set up an amazing spread of burgers, chips, fruit, and drinks for our team after the game! Our best fans will always be those who feed us.
